Narrow Aisle Pallet Racking

Narrow Aisle Pallet Racking

A Narrow Aisle Pallet Racking layout allows for a high volume of pallets to be stored compared to a standard APR installation. Racking bays comprise vertical end frames that support horizontal beams. The beams, connected to the frames, are adjustable in the height to accommodate varying height unit loads and to enable future changes. Each pallet is supported within a narrow aisle pallet racking scheme, which means that stock rotation and accessibility are as good as a wide aisle system. Narrow aisle pallet racking systems have an aisle width of around 1.6 metres. Dedicated narrow aisle forklift trucks operate within the system, but the net result is a dramatic increase in space utilisation. Because narrow aisle trucks are specialised machines, they can lift higher and work faster than general-purpose lift trucks. They do not turn in the aisles and do need guidance. Therefore, a guide rail or wire guidance system is necessary.

In any racking layout, there are four main considerations.
a. The space occupied by the unit load and the storage system.
b. The width of the aisles between the unit loads to facilitate access.
c. The width of the gangways running at right angles to the aisles.
d. Any other areas allocated to marshalling areas, vehicle loading and fire escape routes.

Key Features of Narrow Aisle Pallet Racking.
Floor Space Utilisation – Good (approximately 45%)
Speed of Throughput – Excellent. Forks can elevate whilst the truck is travelling.
Stock Rotation – Easily achieved.
Selection and Order Picking – Excellent. All individual loads are accessible.
Stock Variability – Standard pallets can hold different goods.
Safety of Goods –  Very good. All pallets are individually supported in the rack.
Handling Equipment – Racking is designed around specialist narrow aisle trucks.
